No one who opposes civil rights should be our nation’s Attorney General

Update: The Senate is set to vote on the nomination of Jeff Sessions for Attorney General on the evening of Wednesday, February 8. Take action now by calling your Senators to tell them to do everything they can to stop him from being our next Attorney General.

Senator Sessions has spent his career undermining civil rights, voting rights, LGBTQ rights, women’s rights, immigration, criminal justice reform and hate crime laws — all of which would be under his purview as Attorney General. He’s voted against the Violence Against Women Act, criminal justice reform and anti-hate crimes legislation and has even called the Voting Rights Act “intrusive” for seeking to protect eligible minority voters.

Bend the Arc has also discovered new disturbing information about the kinds of organizations Sen. Sessions supports:

  • Over the past decade Senator Jeff Sessions has repeatedly partnered with two right-wing anti-immigrant organizations which have strong ties to white supremacist, anti-semitic movements.

  • He has regularly attended their events, he has accepted their awards, and he has even praised them in the Congressional Record.

And his responses to questions during his confirmation hearing only increased our concern. The American Jewish community has spent generations fighting for civil rights issues, and we must defend them now.

Bend the Arc is part of a national coalition of civil rights organizations mobilizing against the nomination of Senator Sessions — we need all of us to take action to have an impact. Pick up the phone now and and ask your Senators to vote against his nomination.
